(8.14.11) Less than one month away from the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks, and now this: reports that workers at the World Trade Center construction site are boozing it up on the job. The signs outside the site read "Safety First" and "Our #1 priority is to send our workers home safe to their families!" But according to a shocking report surfacing in The New York Post, workers are putting themselves and the entire project at risk by getting smashed at lunch. According to the paper, it's happening at bars -- Eamonn's Irish Bar & Restaurant and Uncle Mike's both on Murray Street, in Lower Manhattan. It claims some workers are taking liquid lunches, then stumbling back to their dangerous jobs, inebriated. Even with the construction effort running around the clock and buildings rising rapidly the Post says its reporters spotted workers heading north from the site at lunchtime to get inside two Murray Street bars. They reportedly saw workers downing bottles of beer, shots of whiskey, and one hardhat reportedly downing Vodka. A worker at one of the bars told PIX11 News reports are not true. A Port Authority spokesman told The Post, the agency has "zero-tolerance" for such potentially, deadly behavior and will move to fire anyone found intoxicated on the job. Calls from PIX11 News to unions representing the workers were not immediately returned.
